What are tooth extractions?
Tooth extractions are a fast and relatively pain-free method of treatment used to remove teeth that are decaying, damaged, or affected.
For wisdom teeth, tooth extractions are particularly common. The last of your molars to break through the gum line are the wisdom teeth. They’re at the very back of your mouth, with two in your upper arch and two in your lower arch.
They are more likely to become impacted or cause crowding problems because wisdom teeth come in after all of your other teeth.
How do I prepare for tooth extractions?
Dr. Zhitnitsky conducts an oral exam, reviews your oral health history, and takes a series of oral X-rays before performing a tooth extraction procedure. Inform Dr. Zhitnitsky during your consultation about any drugs, vitamins, or dietary supplements that you take on a daily basis.
Also, if you have any of the following medical conditions, inform Dr. Zhitnitsky:
- High Blood pressure
- Disease of the kidneys
- Diabetes
- Heart congenital defect
These conditions may not prohibit you from having tooth extractions, but during the operation they may increase your risk of complications.
What are the types of tooth extractions?
At Encino Dream Smile, Dr. Zhitnitsky performs three types of extractions: Baby tooth extraction, regular extraction and impacted wisdom tooth extraction.
Surgical extractions
If your tooth or teeth require additional steps for removal, you may need a Surgical tooth extraction. Dr. Zhitnitsky will administer a local anesthetic first, to make sure you are comfortable. During the surgical extraction, Dr. will access your tooth and gently remove it.
After removing your tooth or teeth Dr. Zhitnitsky will send you off with a list of recovery instructions.
Wisdom tooth extractions
Wisdom teeth are usually first to require extraction because in many people, they are impacted. That means that they have not completely emerged from the gums and are unable to develop in their usual place in the mouth or emerge.
Wisdom teeth extraction is a common procedure in oral surgery.
What is recovery like after tooth extractions?
It’s common to experience some mild discomfort, gum swelling, and sensitivity following tooth extractions. Apply an ice pack on your cheek for 10 minutes per hour to minimize inflammation.
Eat just soft foods, including mashed potatoes, scrambled eggs, or Jell-O, for the first few days. You can always brush as usual and floss, but be careful to avoid the site of extraction.
You should reintroduce your favorite foods and drinks to your diet as your mouth starts to heal. Be diligent and make sure to attend your appointment for follow-up.
