What are dental implants?
Dental implants, like a natural tooth root, are custom-fitted, artificial tooth roots made of medical grade titanium and surgically anchored into the jawbone.
A single implant is covered with a porcelain crown, while a bridge is usually fitted with multiple implants. An implant overdenture replaces a full-arch of teeth in the upper or lower jaw.
Implants are solid, secure, and permanent. They are built to fit seamlessly with your natural teeth, which is why implants are always the chosen option for gaps to be filled and a beautiful smile restored.
Am I a good candidate for dental implants?
Dr. Zhitnitsky evaluates whether you have sufficient jawbone mass and healthy gums before you obtain dental implants. A Dental CT scan is used to discover important information about your teeth. This special X-ray produces a 3D image of your teeth, soft tissues, nerves, and bones.
To assess the size and type of implant you need, and placement during surgery, Dr. Zhitnitsky uses these 3D images. If the CT scan shows issues that require correction, Dr. Zhitnitsky may suggest additional procedures before implantation surgery.
What is the process of getting dental implants?
In-office surgery conducted under local anesthesia or sedation is required to receive dental implants. If you need teeth removed prior to implantation, before the area is prepared, they will be gently extracted. Once the dental implant is firmly in the bone, your dentist will suture the gum closed.
After implantation surgery, the amount of time it takes to finish the reconstruction depends on how easily your body recovers. Dr. Zhitnitsky advises you what timeline to expect depending on your overall oral health.
You return to the office to place your custom-made porcelain crown, bridge, or denture once your implant fuses completely and you are ready to complete the reconstruction process.
